hi all,

I need some help, like everyone here. I'm currenlty in town thinking about relocating from FL. before I can make some sort of decision about if I can move here, I need to find a neighborhood that I can live in with my wife and 3 year old. the rub is that it has to be near a decent school, be relatively safe, and I am looking for a hip neighborhood to live in. Since I am exhaused and will be leaving 1/24, I'm trying to hunt down the right neighborhood. so far I love montrose (by empire cafe, soecifically,) but I haven't looked a ton for housing there. I also was poking around the 6th ward, but it seems like it's still touch and go at night. on the flip side (completely the opposite cultural direction), I love university village (west university?) but wow, I cannot afford an 8,000 sq.fr house, and I'm pretty sure that I can't afford one there. I am trying to stay inside the 610 at all costs. since I'm sure that someone will ask, I work in financial services, but I'm looking to move to the university system, and my wife works with foster kids.

I'm hoping that I can find what I need, as my wife keeps mentioning the A-town option, and I think Houston has more to offer overall.

Based on location, needs and price-point, I think a good start would be the Heights.

Your budget is an important consideration as to where people are going to direct you to. There are a great many interesting neighborhoods in the loop at all different price points. It just depends on how much gentrification you demand to be comfortable. If you really want "hip" then Montrose is probably a good choice and the schools are really good. But, houses are really expensive and even renting is expensive. If your budget is limited, there are a lot of interesting neighborhoods on the East End of town where your money goes further, but the gentrification process is not as far along as the west side.

Good luck! I was in your shoes a few months ago and I absolutely love Houston and I love my neighborhood. Houston has a lot to offer, you just have to know where to look. I prefer to enjoy Houston on the seat of my bike. Cycling here is amazing and if you are a cyclist, you will enjoy the fact that there is very little traffic inside the loop on the weekends.

I like Houston but if I had a choice I would definitely move to Austin. I love the outdoors and Austin has so much more geography to offer. Also, Austin has a lot more central entertainment. The downside to Austin is that it doesn't have the tremendous amount of employment opportunities that Houston has. Also, it tends to be more like a college town which isn't bad but historically college towns do not have a lot of significant big business employment opportunity in them.

You must be talking only about bars/clubs, because otherwise Houston has much more centrally than Austin does. Great museums, theater district, pro sports venues. We (Austin) also have no real equivalents to neighborhoods like Montrose.
Aside from geography, music festivals, or wanting to relive their college years, I don't know why Houston people would be saying that Austin is so much better. Perhaps Austin's effective self-marketing efforts and magazine articles....

Exactly. When our kids were young (3 sons), being "hip" never crossed our minds.

Just sayin'...

You mean you can't be hip in a minivan? What if you put some rims on the minivan and wore Ed Hardy shirts.

We tried to stay hip with a crossover. You know, touch-screen electronics, 7 seats, room for two 12 pks of beer + ice in the floor bins, and 26 highway mpg from the fuel-saver engine.

Actually I think with the first kid, 'hip' goes out the window. With the second, 'lame' is a more apt description and there's no escaping it. Remember to never trust anyone over 30.
