Moving to Houston in the next few months, and am looking for some advice / further insight on inner loop neighborhoods. My husband is from Houston (West U), so we're familiar with neighborhoods to a certain extent, but are looking for that really local insight that can help us narrow in on particular areas. Basic specs are 2 small kids (2 & 4), and a probable budget in the 650-800K range.

In terms of what we're looking for, I figure it's easiest to list things we love about where we currently live:
-Relatively short, easy, bikeable commutes
-Easy access to green space, playground, nature, etc.
-Real community neighborhood with an 'It Takes A Village' mindset, with folks helping one another out with carpools, spontaneous playdates, neighborhood potlucks, cup of sugar, etc.
-We also love our strong public elementary with an involved neighborhood community, although private school isn't off the table once we move so that's not completely critical.

The main neighborhoods we've been considering include Southgate, Woodland Heights, and the part of the Heights zoned for Harvard Elem. But would love other suggestions we've overlooked, or more information on those particular neighborhoods.

Thanks!

Don't miss the Garden Oaks & Oak Forest areas in your search (77018). You'll find nice homes with decent yards in your price range. The sense of community is awesome! It's like a small town in the city. You'll connect quickly w/ kids in pre-school (though get on a waiting list before you move, so many young kids in the area now local MDO's & preschools are full).

Be sure and tour Oak Forest Elementary. Fabulous facility, must see to appreciate. We've lived in the area for 4 years & LOVE it!
