I read a few news sites and papers in Houston and have noticed a disturbing increase in the amount of violent crimes in normally non violent neighborhoods. I would think that robberies would increase as a result of the economy but it seems like a lot of odd crimes happening.

No, it's all media hype.

From what I've read and heard, violent crime is actually on the decline and petty crime on the rise.

The biggest petty trend now is the steal of F-150 tailgates. They have a street value of 4,500.

Violent crime has dropped but maybe it spread around more. So it just appears to be worse if you were in a traditionally safe crime-free area.

Ha! I haven't seen one of those in a while. The ones with the truck cameo in the mural are my favorite.

I guess my tailgate is safe it is "woefully" devoid of airbrush art.

If it has the rearview backing camera, it's fair game.

Haha, same here. The best one I saw was a 'truck cameo' but in front of downtown Houston, except the skyline was right next to a Caribbean style beach & waterfront a la Miami. I'll bet that one went for $5,000.
