There are lots of major positions for IT and Help Desk around Houston. Oil companies are always hiring for IT, not to mention graphics companies, hospitals and more. I would suggest places to look, but I wouldn't want to get into trouble for advertising. Simply do a search for Job Search, Houston on Google or whatever and you'll find a multitude of places to hunt out jobs. You'll see... one had over 4 thousand entries for West Houston alone.

All four of my siblings work IT, not to mention my uncle and stepfather, and they've all had no trouble finding a job whatsoever.

What? You should not have a problem getting an IT job. You may have to start out at the helpdesk or desktop level if you don't have any experience. Robertsd247 must not have any IT skills or is a very bad interviewer. Weather changes? Insurance companies? You don't know what you are talking about. Just look at Monster, Dice, ect... and look for yourself to see what's out there. Look in the employment section of chron.com.

Response: Dude...you need to get YOUR facts straight. I am IT security architect with forensics training (and my investigations have resulted in people going to JAIL) and I could not find a job. Entry-level work? Yeah..I am real sure those jobs are available...IN HYDRABAD...not Houston.

What...do you keep your thermostat on 50 degrees? My 1000sq. ft. loft in downtown (with 16 ft. ceilings and huge windows) ran $70.00 in the winter and no more than $180.00 in the summer. True...it does flood at times, but not due to global warming. Houston has been tropical since the 1800's.

Response: 180.00??? That is flat out LIE. There is no way what your describing is can be powered for 180.00/month in the summer unless you are not running your air conditioner...and you NEED an air conditioner in Houston.

Get your facts straight man. Downtown, Midtown, and the East End of downtown is upcoming and other areas are great; however, you will probably spend at least $1000.00 a month for a 1 bedroom for these areas. Yes, stay away from the southwest part of town.

Response: Downtown is a dangerous hole and you know it. Yeah they have put up 2,400/month apartments on 59 in the montrose and 3,000/month near the ballpark, but you you live outside 610, 500 to 800 is pretty good and very realistic.

If you are living downtown you sure are not doing casual jogs at night or going out unless you are in your car.

Montrose is a very diverse neighborhood, and is no longer considered "the gay" area (unlike the early 80’s). It’s true there is a gay population in Montrose, but it’s know for more than that. St. Thomas University, the Manil Museum, great restaurants, and nice living.

Response: Never said it wasn't. Hell I liked it there as well as University Place. Too bad is costs too much to live there. I was covering the gay aspect just in case the person needed to know that. Being gay in the wrong part of Houston can get you to be a victim of hate crime real quick. Houston is packed with Southern Baptists who want every gay and Muslims tortured and killed.

The bottom line is you can find (and many others I know have), can find IT jobs in Houston. All of these big corporations in Houston need IT help.

Again, I never said you could not find an IT job...but your chances are WAY BETTER in Dallas. Houston's IT is drying up faster than water in the Sahara. Corporations are not going to insure data centers in Houston where the gulf coast is expected to have 4 to 7 major hurricanes a year.

you can always direct yourself toward GIS, it has been growing and a lot of industries are using that application. And, there are plenty of jobs!

I was at a mobile phone store and read in a magazine (which I can't remember the name because it was two weeks ago) that the fastest growing and up-and-coming IT companies in Texas are in Houston - I swear to God. P.S. That's a very good thing. Cheers.

Come on Robertsd247...get your facts straight and do some research before you make such obsurd statements.

I pay $1000 a month for my decent sized place downtown. My friend lives at Lofts At The Ballpark (right accross the baseball stadium) and pays $950.00 for a one bedroom. Many places in Midtown are under or right at $1000.00.

Yes it's true. Not one electric bill was over $180 this summer.

Look at the statistics, downtown has one of the lowest crime rates in the city.

I have not seen or heard of any reports of gay bashing. And Muslim bashing...what the hell are you talking about?

Get us some references if you are going to say all of this bull****.

Oh yeah, look at the 10 pages of IT jobs I found on the Yahoo website Technology jobs in Houston, TX - Yahoo! Hotjobs

I find robertsd247's career history quite sad. I see that we hire more moron newbies everyday and yet you had to move around so much just to get a job. maybe you did it all wrong

HP has been moving a big chunk of their central IT to Houston due to lower costs compared to the coasts.

I'm going to be moving to Houston and starting a IT Consulting/Solutions Company (leaving behind the one I have here in Detroit) With 5.5 million people ,and growing all the time, I dont see how their can be a shortage of IT jobs/need.

Roberts I also find your information quite hard to believe. You can search the job banks and see the demand for IT people. Compare Houston to Detroit, for example.

Also my uncle who lives in a Condo downtown pays about $200 a month for 1600sqft (electricity). WHat did you have your thermostat set at? 32?

Ok...time for a dose of reality.

If you have a power bill less than $180/month, you are stealing electricity. Period. Deregulating Texas sent power bills up 350% on average. Houston Chronicle would be a good place to look that up.

IT is leaving houston is droves. Do a monster.com comparison on Dallas vs. Houston...in fact Houston vs. any other major city, except in Florida. I do not know what you are hearing but every industry IT rag out there says insurance companies are jacking up rates or refusing to insure any new data center 100 miles of a south eastern coastline. Please tell me where you are getting YOUR information.

Montrose is the primary gay area of the city (I was just mentioning it in case anyone needed to know that, I am not a homophobe, quite the opposite in fact). I also know that the southern baptist convention is a real menace to city of Houston and is constantly in its business where it should not be. Go to a city council meeting. You'll see the evil little bastards praying to their imaginary god hoping their lobbying will get all of the strip clubs closed, gays banned from the city, or whatever else they want that week. Unfortunately, that is not shown on local TV, you'll have to go there to see it for yourself.

If you think you are getting good rates at the Ball park apartments, good for you. I was around when they first got built and the prices where in the stupid range...and at $1000/month, they still are. Anything INSIDE Loop 610 will be $1000+ on average. FACT. Look at apartmentguide.com and such.

Now Ms. Krinkle, I certainly hope you can stop interjecting unwanted opinions and let people make their own decisions on what I said. I lived in that dump city for 30+ years? Have you?

I would rather show people what is wrong with a place before showing them what is good about. Some people want to see reality, apparently, you do not.

Houston has some good things. One of them is seeing downtown in the rear-view mirror at the end of the day.
