We had the same kind of summer here last year - went hot 'til about mid October (I remember thinking how much I wanted to put out Fall decor but it just didn't feel right!) and then we had snow and all the below freezing days for winter.
not quite the same, I was watching, you all had the good stuff while we had 100s for 2 months straight.

All I can say is: Central Air...it's a good thing.
I lived in 3 apartments in SA, and none of them had central air can you imagine 100 degrees for two months with no central air? At the last one, we had to cook with our kitchen door open, and the 100 degree air outside didn't help much I didn't see many beacon hill houses with central air. not many in monte vista and Alta vista either. In fact I only noticed them a lot outside the loop

Ok...well, the lack of central air would be a bad thing even in SA. I did that for a few weeks while renting a duplex in Alamo Heights. I don't think most of the older homes in those areas - AH, MV, OP, TH, etc... (this was in the mid 80s/early 90s) had central air unless the houses were renovated with central a/c. I finally pulled the "my dog is dying in this heat while I'm at work" card with my landlord, a puppy lover. He had 2 a/c units (albeit ancient ones) installed within 24 hrs for my dog.

I know I could not have acclimated THAT much, but was August this year THAT bad? I didn't think so when I think back to how miserable I thought August 2009 was.

I think our humidity makes it less likely to get heat stroke than in Dallas. It's so uncomfortable with the humidity here - that we run from A/C to A/C. It is more deceptive in Dallas, where it's not as uncomfortable - and you stay outside longer.

I dunno, I don't think August was that bad either. I don't think the entire summer was bad. Seemed about right to me

Yah - I just didn't think it was that bad either. That's why I was surprised to see glory's assessment:

I guess I just wasn't that bothered by it this year.
