Hello Americans!

My husband and I are moving to Houston in your state. We are moving from Germany ( from Europe ). We have never been in the USA. I heard Houston is not that nice but CHEAPER. Cheaper is good! We only have approximately 6000 $ per month to spend. Maybe more if I work full time. But not much more than 6000 please. Can we AFFORD Houston? We like to live in a nice area. I heard that Houston is big. I never use my car. I have a ticket for the bus and subway etc. It is normally faster than by car. I don't want to live too far away from the areas where a lot of is going on. It does not have to be a big apartment. I think we are ok with a small apartment if we can not afford a bigger apartment!

Danke! Thank you for the help!

I wish I had $6000 per month.

If you want to be close to public transit, amenities etc. then having a $6000/month budget easily gets you into Midtown, Downtown. Right now, if you want to rely on public transit, being as close in as you can get is your best bet.

You can get a nice apartment for around $1200 USD/month. Houston is a large city, bigger than several Eastern states. It is very likely you will need a car here since things are spread out. www.har.com

Have you been talking to the Californians on the Houston forum?

Anyway welcome to Texas when you do come You will need a car to get around, and it does get HOT, but you will probably find it to be better than you expected.

I think it's pretty rude to come into a Houston forum and one of the first words out of your mouth is that you heard our city isn't nice. Damn Germans.

6000 a month? In Houston, you can take your pick with that one. With that budget, try somewhere in the Loop (Downtown, Montrose, Midtown, Uptown, etc.).
