I realize the OP probably has things figured out by now, but for anyone stumbling across this thread, the "stupid metal thing" in the OP's sketch is the bottom bracket which holds the faucet fixture to the underside of the sink.
To remove it simply remove the nut just below the bracket.
I used a spark plug wrench to remove it, made it wonderfully easy, but any old wrench would work if you have the room under the sink. BTW, if the nut is rusted

... use PB Blaster, the liquid magnetically clings to the nut rather than drip off.
Anyway, once the nut is off the bracket falls off and you can pop the faucet right off.
Another poster mentioned calling a plumber to replace your faucet, well, that's just plain stupid!

Besides, just think how much of a faucet upgrade you could do with the money saved by not using a plumber for such an easy job!
