Some ways to make the firplace the main focal point in our great room. Style is traditional with some contemporary edges. Right now it is only a tiled fireplace, what can we do to make it a beautiful focal point. PLEASE HELP.
Can you post pictures? It would be easier to give suggestions.
Wish i could right now our camera is broke, know one thing we could use for X/mas.
It is just a ugly fireplace, with ugly tan tile around it a plain jane white painted mantel, that is it. My room colors are a baked sconce with a bit of gold for rom color walls, white moulding, tan, brown, beige, burgundy and rust and gold in my furniture colors. Kitchen adjacant has the same color walls, but done in tuscan style with a lot of wrought iron elements.

I'm a little confused.
First you say "make the fireplace the main focal point".
Then, "It is just ugly... that is it".
So, the f/pl needs a facelift-
You make it the focal point by way of furniture placement.
Pictures would really help- borrow one (camera) from a friend.
Put some large pretty vases on both ends or a beautiful mantle clock. Don't put lots of "little Knickknacks" You could also put a large picture to pick up colors in the room above the mantle or even a large picture mirror.
Sounds like everything blends together. You probably need a darker contrasting color either on the mantel or the tile to make it stand out, but it's hard to say without a picture.
Without seeing the style, It is only a guess. but sometimes an old fashioned wooden mantle with columns and a mirror and some nice fancy woodwork can make a difference. You could strip the paint. You could just go with better tile.
We are pleased with our fireplace.

A before picture, but the mantle was painted white and UGLY. The fireplace had hideous marble slabs glued to the front of it. It looked terrible. We like it now.
For the otehr one, we just stripped the paint off the brick. The after picture is not quite all done, but still looking better: http://coldjensens.com/files/images/indianrmfrplce2.preview.jpg (broken link)
