Just bought a home and the AC is pretty old looking, it barley blows. so we call an ac guy and he said it has a dirty coil but he would recommend changing out the whole system which would cost $6,000...
He said he wasent even sure if they fixed the coil that it would start up so thats why he said we should get a brand new one... anyone help please?
Never rely on one person/quote.
Get several quotes/estimates, ask lots of questions and make an educated decision.
It's quite possible that that is the only problem- a dirty coil.
Get several estimates. Also look on the ID plate, probably in the main blower for the age of the unit. it will also tell you the size. then decide if changing out the system is cost effective. If the unit is older, say 10 years, it may be more efficient to change it out and it will cost less to run a more efficient system. also, will repairing it create more problems?
always check with a least 3 companies and get some recomendations from friends on service they have used.
They can replace thew coil if its leaking or even clean it. never replace the whole unit until you really need to. Get a guy that will service the whole unit and repalce the coil if its bad.It takes a number of years to makeup for a more effcient unt really if it's like 10-12 rated unit.

Change your filter. Look at your indoor coil which should consist of removing screws. Clean if needed and clear drain line. Spray outdoor condenser off with hose. All simple things you can do to help prolong your system.
