I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good quality paint for the inside of my house. The paint I have on the walls now is really bad and something got on it and when I tried to clean some of the paint came off. The area I want to paint is about 800 sq feet and I would prefer something that only requires one coat. I'm on a budget but am willing to pay more for good quality.

I'm a huge fan of Benjamin Moore interior paints.
Cost a little more, but very long lasting.

We used Sherwin-Williams for our house and it turned out great. We used a brand of theirs called Superpaint. A good friend of ours is a contractor and does a lot of painting. He recomended it to us and told us that it is a very high quality paint, and its what he used to paint his house. We were happy with it.

I was terribly disapointed when I found out that Superpaint wasn't bullet proof though , but I was happy that it came in other colors than blue, red, and yellow though.

I agree w/ Mullman. I have been using Benjamin Moore since I started out doing showrooms in the 70s. The designers insisted on BMoore. I especially like their historic colors, b/c I like 18th C decor and the colors in that collection are singular - can't find anything like that pigmentation elsewhere. Plus, the quality is outstanding. Yes, it will cost you more but the paint holds up as far as durability as well as against fading.

I'm doing interior painting with Behr from Home Depot. Both areas were painting light colors over differnt types of paneling, without using sealer, 2 coats did the trick.

I've used Finneran & Haley historic colors in the past but they've gotten difficult to find,

Got to say, another Benjamin Moore fan here - but I also like Porter Paints too.

Oh I forgot to ask if anyone thought I needed to do a second coat. The walls are painted powder blue. I want something in the blue family that would go browns but wouldn't be too much of a distraction. The light fixtures and door knobs are all brushed nickel so I need something that would look good with that. I really just want the room to look bigger. I live in a tiny house so the living room/dining room area are one big room.

I used Behr Parisian Taupe & sponged Antique white over it in the bathroom & the hardware & fixtures are all either brushed nickel or chrome. The vanity is brown. The trim is antique white.

The kitchen has tiles from the 1930s/40s that are shade of gray but the walls meeting it are pine panelling. I used Full Moon which is a gray, but it is a green gray (It looks white while you put it on.) because of the tiles which tend green. Behr also has an extremely light gray that tends blue. I don't remember the name but if you get all of the Behr chips & charts you can find Full Moon then find its blue equivalent. The trim is white in this case.

Either of these color combinations would work for you.

If you want to go with a different brand, just take that chip with you look for an equivalent.

It's hard to say if you would need 2 coats but I'd guess that a blued gray would probably do it in one. No one who has seen the gray walls thinks that it's gray, so don't worry that I'm telling you to paint the walls to look like a prison.

My house is 750 sq feet so I have the same spacial problem that you do.

Just keep your paint in the same color or color family throughout the whole house and you will be fine! As for two coats . . . you may not need to do that if the blue is a light blue and you are sticking to something about the same color - or going darker. However, w/ dark paints, you just about always have to do 2 coats to keep from showing any streaks, lines, etc. At least, that is my experience.

You know, I happened to think that several years ago I looked paint up b/c I was wanting something for rental property - and I remember reading some great info from Consumer Reports about "best values" for paint. I found this link - and you may like reading the info, too.

SB - great suggestions! Behr is good paint. I had to lease a condo when on assignment and the landlord painted the walls while I was there . . . and used Behr. It seemed to be a paint that goes on easily, wh/ impresses me. I HATE TO PAINT!!!! So how easy it glides means a lot to me.
