I'm helping a friend..his place is about 25 yrs old...the walls are sheet rock

the stuff I know, good side out is a light grey color and the back side a darker grey.

This stuff (yes it's sheet rock) is more of a light brown color...like a card board box color....

Just a difference in brands or what....just curious

Default Is this new sheetrock or old stuff???????

They now make a type of sheetrock that is rated as being mold resistant. It sort of looks like you describe. Fairly new to the market. Has a different color look than the normal stuff.

If it is old stuff, who knows what it is???? Maybe got discolored somehow. The water resistant stuff is green. The normal stuff always has been an off white or grey AFAIK. Some sheetrock did have a sort of browish cardboard looking color on the back side, maybe they got the old stuff on backwards.

Most all drywall board has a paper backing. Or as some say- the mold gravy-train.
The paper backing generally will darken with age. But it's just paper- kindda like old brown paper bags.
The newer "moldless" drywall board has no paper.

Well he's only owned 5 yrs and we're riping the main bathroom apart..so the anti mold rock would make sense but this looks like old construction to me...and I'm not a newbie Discolored...don't thihnk so...the areas behind the wall cabinets (never painted or primed) is this brown cardboard color I mentioned.

As I type I just had an idea...when we decide where the new stuff mounts i'll be able to bust out a section I'll be able to check out the back side...maybe it's on backwards...my sisters house had some of that too...different color (and texture)though...

I seem to remember 3/8" sheetrock having that thick paper on the backside. I'd guess they did it to increase the strength.

Good guess is somebody did put it on backwards. The paper on sheetrock will vary a bit depending on who made it, not all the same from different guys. There is like 5 or 6 major manufacturers. I've hung stuff that was almost pure white paper on the front. Stuff on the back varies too.

I would not describe the paper on the back as "Bag Paper" as it tends to be more dense and has a harder finish but a lot of it is a sort of brownish color.

Maybe they had a weird idea to avoid the groove where the panels join, not a very common practice in my experience. Is more common to use the green water resistant stuff in bathroom applications.

This new mold resistant stuff is not all the same. Again depends on who makes it. Some of it does have a paper coating, some does not, if it does have paper it is somehow chemically treated. Some looks more like the cement board Durock and that has some type of fiberglass or plastic coating. The stuff I've seen is sort of brown or tan in color.

It could be some type of coating somebody applied too. I've done that behind showers. Put on a thin coat of paint and then go over it with sheet plastic about like wallpapering, then install the shower or whatever. Lots of tricks in the big city.

Tearing out the original (40-year-old) drywall in our house, we saw some odd colors. Most of it was peach on the front and brown-ish on the back. I'm pretty sure the peach was the original coat of paint, just after 40 years, it looks less like paint and more like part of the drywall.

When renovating our old house, the sheetrock paper was brown. I'm guessing that 20-30 years ago, gray was no "in" for color. It was normal sheetrock and nothing special.

How do you repair the wall where it looks like cardborard after taking down wallpaper so you can paint the wall?

Either replace the wallboard in that section, or cover with Gardz sealant and then skim coat with joint compound.
