Looks like an Orb Weaver, Family Araneidae - Orb Weavers - BugGuide.Net. It is basically harmless to humans(except maybe be scared).
They will not bite unless seriously provoked into it, and no more serious than a bee sting.
Do you know how many bugs/insects will now live because you killed a predator?
Unless he/she was in a pathway, it would have been much better to let it be, they are harmless.
I agree - I really dislike spiders in my house, but I let them live if they're outside. They are just doing their spider job and don't have any intention of harming me!
