Any idea how to remove the ball shaped spider nests that appear under the house eves? They are too tough for a garden hose to displace and too high up for a broom. And they form too often to be removed by once a year power-washing. Some of the nests are an inch or two long. Is there a chemical solution that would help? Enzymes? Soap?
Thanks for the help. I like the idea of shop vac and pipe, as long as the extension cord will take me around the house. Pole pruner idea is good too, but I might just end up smashing the nests if not careful. And as to whether they are something other than spiders, I have no idea except that they do not look like the tents you see in the trees, more like little footballs of web.
But I must admit I cannot find any google images of spider nests that look like these.
Shop vac with a bunch of extensions. Even a regualt vacuum will work. If you do not have extensions, you could use a piece of PVC as suggested, ut depening ont eh size of your house, it could get heavy.
You can get adjustable length painteinr poles and get a stiff brush that will screw into the end of the pole.

I'd try to find out what the things are before you try to do anything about them. Perhaps you need an exterminator? Or maybe you can post some pictures?
We have lots of spiders here during the summer/fall - but I've never seen anything like you describe in the eaves of the house. Lots of wasp nests - and an occasional spider web (with a spider in the middle). There are spider nests in the bushes - but not on the house. Robyn
Barns attract orb weavers and other cobweb spiders. They build webs in hours. Orb weavers usually stretch them between a barn and a tree for example, I run into them all the time, they are also the ones called a barn spider but really don't build IN the barn.
These are most likely wolf spiders, pretty harmless. They build funnels for their prey to wander into, then snatch them. Thick sticky webs that collect dust. Plenty of them in barns.
When I worked in Indiana, at a barn, when we arrived to work before dark and flipped on the lights, the entire barn floor and walls would be COVERED in thousands of spiders. They don't like the light and within seconds disappeared into the stall and barn walls, into their webs between the wood planks.
I had the exterminator out today for the scheduled bi-monthly visit. He had a thing in the back of his truck that looked like a ruggedized version of a telescoping duster. I asked what it was for. His answer: to remove spider webs and egg sacs from under roof eaves, doorframes, etc.
