Thank you all. Just a few points, to clarify... Mr Willies- The stupid, ugly, unnecessary, hearth is concrete with slate tile over it, not brick. We have a guy coming to give a price to remove it, but we suspect it will be too expensive. If it must stay, I anticipate trouble trying to nail or screw anything on it lest the slate crack.
Also, it's a locking engineered floor, not laminate, if it matters. WitNit- gluing onto the hearth might work for us.
The catch is to allow the floor to move under the molding. If not, you will have a potential buckle spot. You may have to jury rig something like trimming an existing piece of molding. Buying an unfinished piece of molding that will fit then staining it to match the floor.
As I look at where my hardwood floor meets carpet, vinyl, fireplace hearth, front door threshold, french doors, etc. the molding is not an exact color/grain match. A close enough match, but not a perfect match.
