I have smoke and CO detectors that are hard-wired all over the house (just moved in a few wks ago). This morning, 1 of the CO monitors started beeping. I removed it from the ceiling to see the back side and indeed it has a bunch of wires on the back-side which connects to electrical wiring. The 'Power' light is also on green. I pressed the 'Reset' button many times already and it's still beeping.

So I'm now puzzled how it is possible to shut this thing up.... is not like I can just change out the battery (which is what I normally would've done for a non-hard-wired unit). PLEASE HELP before I go crazy from the beeping.

CO detectors have a lifespan, it's probably expired and telling you it's time to replace me.

Google the model and include lifespan in search. If there is repertive type beep like 2 or 3 in row and then a pause that may indicate exactly what is wrong.

--------edit-----

Dong a little research myself is there a battery backup?

Never heard that they beep at end of lifespan, but the lifespan for CO detector is supposedly 5-7 years so it wouldn't be a bad idea. Supposed to replace smoke detectors after 10 years as well.

I know it's hard wired but the other possibility is it includes a backup battery that has gone dead and makes it beep (just like a battery powered unit with a low battery).

I'll check again on the battery backup. It does have a door to the battery holder but I didn't pry it up hard enough the first time for fear I'll snap it. Thanks!

Our carbon monoxide detector went off once when I was charging a deep cycle battery, the gasses from the battery charging made the thing start beeping.

they generally will beep when needing replaced about every 7 years. unplug the wiring and check the mfg date. should be printed on it somewhere.

I just checked and the unit was made in Feb 2004... Also, I found the spec sheet on this model and it says "New feature: Alert user to replace CO alarm after 7 years of operation".... that's it.... now for the actually removal.... see below questions please...

I just took a pic of how the CO monitor is connected. See below. The top part is on the ceiling, the bottom part is the back side of the CO monitor.

I tried to open the battery compartment, and it would not open. I also tried to pull out the wiring connected to the unit itself (the circular plastic piece)... also not possible.

Is my last resort disconnecting the AC wires (where the 2 red wire covers are on the top part)? If so, I cannot find the breaker switch that kills that power source.... is my only alternative to turn off the Main Power to the whole house, then disconnect the AC wires?

Here is the pic:

Check the rest of them, if they are all marked as similar date I'd replace them all.

I'd get at least one with a ppm readout.
