About a week ago, the First Alert CO detector started chirping. It has both plug in and battery power sources and showed the battery power was low. It was plugged in to a wall outlet, but because the detector is a few years old, I figured the batteries just were at the end of their useful life.
In the battery compartment is the same message that others saw: "Use two Energizer E91 only" We tried a couple of other AA batteries, but an "Error" message would keep appearing on the CO detector's screen. I've looked in a few stores for Energizer E91 batteries but can't find them.
So, what's the story? Should I keep hunting for E91 batteries, or buy a new detector?
I don't know if you need a new detector or no, but E91 are just regular Energizer alkaline batteries. I can't imagine it making a bit of difference if you used a different brand so long as it was alkaline.
E91 or MN1500 or Duralock AA alkaline batteries are RECHARGEABLE
After looking this up on the manufacturer's websites, it says these batteries are rechargeable. Since they are rechargeable, they are NOT interchangeable with regular AA alkaline batteries that could explode if you tried to recharge them.
Might be time to buy another if its over 7 years old.
Reason: Inside CO detectors is an electro-chemical cell that reacts in the presence of carbon monoxide. It tends to be very accurate. But, over time, the chemical can degrade and its performance is diminished.
Probably what the detector was tested and qualified with. We do this often with products we sell where we test with and use a certain consumable component and then sell the product and say "for best results, use XYZ". It doesn't mean you can't use another product, but for guaranteed performance you may want to consider using what it was qualified with.

e91 is not rechargeable , i was an eveready distributor . it is a standard non rechargeable alkaline . there is no size difference between brands .
they specify e91 or en91 many times just so you don't use non alkaline ,.
