I purchased a used BBQ grill today and the propane tank was 3/4 full but very rusted. It also makes a rattling/crackling noise when it is stationary. I know most tanks make the noise when the tank is moved, but on this tank, even if it's stationary for 2 hours, it still makes a crackling noise. What could this noise be? Will a propane exchange center accept a very rusted tank? If I were to exchange this tank for another one, should I look more at the date or manufacture on the "new" tank or the condition of the "new" tank?
If you're worried about safety, go to the local bulk supplier who can test the tank. Tanks need to be inspected and the date of the last inspection will be stamped on the tank.
I'd just finish using the tank and plan on buying a new one.
