Most house centipedes live in damp moist environments (speaking mainly from experience here) such as drains. We have had them in sinks and tubs. I think they might be nocturnal, because they skitter away in the light, like cockroachs. I am wondering if damp piles of leaves on your roof might be a habitat harboring them?? If you eliminate the damp, dank places they might be living, it might get rid of them. I am totally creeped out by them. We, unfortunately, have a weird millipede issue in our house. Spray repeatedly in areas where you think they are coming in.
p.s. Hoff, that is so scary! It is definitely GIANT. Our centipedes are 1-2 inches long.

BTW - I did not post that pic to exaggerate. Not everyone in Austin has them or sees them, but they are not rare. I see them around my semi-rural home just about every year - usually outside under something that gives them shelter. I think we have had five in the house in thirteen years. I have no idea how they got in the house.
They are spectacular, very creepy looking, and have a venomous bite (kind of in the scorpion class).
we are talking about the long legged fast as hell house centipedes. i currently live in PA and we have a good amount of them here. had them in NJ as well. they are definitely attracted to moisture. pesticides will deter them so you will have less of them, but some will stick around. eliminate as much moisture as you can, dont leave damp clothes on the floor. wet rotting wood is heaven for them. you will see less of them if you close or plug the bathtub and sink drains overnight. my wife had one crawl on her face in the middle of the night once. my cats have fun with them. i find a few dead ones on the floor from time to time.
I have them here at Smoky Crossing in Seymour. I see them mainly by the front door, and also in the bathrooms. I wonder if they live/travel in the shower drains? I usually see one every couple of days in the shower.
They are probably eating silverfish which come up out of the drains.
I agree, centipedes, millepedes, whatever - freak me out. We sometimes find small ones in the downstairs bathroom (hubby takes care of them, but they are FAST!) but I totally freaked when I saw one like the photo in the basement - I swear it was at least 8" long (thankfully, that was yrs. ago and haven't seen another huge sucker since). Not sure how to eliminate them though
