We're moving from a 900 sq. ft. apartment in the city to 3700 sq. ft house in the suburbs (starting a family and we'll be much closer to family and friends).

I'm just curious to know how long it takes to fully furnish a home. I understand that this will vary from person to person, thus looking for individual experiences when furnishing a new home, essentially from scratch.

I know people who have done it in a month, and others who still do not have fully furnished homes after two decades.

It takes a life time... I can't ever recall how many different bedroom sets, dinning room or sofa we have owned throughout my 31 years married...It never ends, because as you grow and age so does your taste~......

Sofas... yeah, those DO wear out.
But, we have the same dining set we bought in 1980!
Some people know what they like (we did, and still do!) and just buy that.

Sweet~ We moved a lot during our younger years as a married couple with kids, so we sell off everything, since we be buying a new home, it just made life easier, yes our taste changed ... There are a few treasures or family heirlooms we have kept throughout our moves, we love em....

We just had some new people move in down the street and Big Local Furniture Store was there most of the morning delivering furniture.

Take it slow. Your monthly payment for shelter is obviously going to be much larger, as well as utilities and possibly commuting costs. Get used to these higher expenses before you go out and buy a whole houseful of furniture that you THINK you can afford. Unless, of course, money is no object.

Thanks for the replies. Since we don't have kids yet, we were thinking of furnishing the living room, master bed, dining, study and one guest room. From what I'm calculating, we will furnish these all in 2-3 years, but with quality furniture. Not sure if that is close to the norm.

Going on five years now, not done. However, we completed the bulk of it - the getting stuff to sit on and eat on part - within the first month or two. The real problem we ran into with getting the house functional was that we had to wait a very long time to get a lot of our furniture. You have to order some items way ahead of time and it can takes months before they show up (this happened with most of our living room furniture, but especially anything upholstered).

Ultimately it depends on how much money you have to spend, and how picky you are.

I moved from a one-bedroom apartment to a three-bedroom house and it was fully furnished the day I moved in. I had a lot of furniture crammed into that apartment! But I'm not fussy about furniture, love to shop at thrift stores, and operate under a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" way of life.
