Okay guys, I just moved into this awesome old house that needs a little TLC, and I'm getting ready to paint the living room. 12 foot ceilings, but about 9 foot up there is a trim that runs around the entire room. Do I paint all of the room the same color, and paint the random floating trim white? Do I paint a lighter shade of the walls above the trim, or what?
I wouldn't paint a different color above the trim. It makes the ceilings look lower. You want the wall color to go all the way to the ceiling to draw attention to that wonderful vertical space. You can still paint the trim the same color as the other trim in the room or you can paint that trim the same color as the walls. Just don't paint a different color on the wall above the trim than the wall below the trim.
You can do a lot with that room. You can paint the walls all the same color above/below the trim, paint the walls/ceiling above the trim a couple shades lighter than the wall below the trim, paint the wall below the trim a couple shades lighter than the wall/ceiling above the trim. The possibilities are endless! It really depends on what you like.
Thanks guys! We're painting over the next few days. Keeping the walls the same color above and below the picture trim. I'll post pics when it's all done :]
my grandmother had the same exact molding, she had it painted the color up to the molding. the above the molding and ceiling white.
I would like it painted the same color up to the ceiling, exactly as "Hopes" stated.
if you paint the color wall up to the molding it makes the ceilings look lower, which is the look my grandmother wanted. why?, that we will never know.
personally, if it it were my house, i would remove it. I see no purpose for it. JMO.
I actually can't remove it. It has paneling below it, and square ceiling tiles above it haha. I'm not ready to replace all of the walling. So for now it's paint

Not saying I would do this but it might have been because she wanted a more intimate feel. I love high ceilings but some people definitely feel like they can make a space too cavernous and not as inviting or intimate.
Because of this there are different things that people do where they want high ceilings but keep things intimate feeling with use of paint, moldings, etc. For example, going with a 14' ceiling but painting it a darker color than the walls. It keeps it airy and open feeling because you do have higher ceilings but it can feel a little more intimate than high white ceilings. Using very thick crown molding or doing a picture ledge like that can be used for the same purpose.
