A few friends have followed the trend of painting their floors white. While I think it looks beautiful in pictures, I wonder what the upkeep would be like, especially with kids & in a 4 season climate.
Has anyone done this? Do they love it or regret it?
At a time when hardwood floors are so desirable, why paint them? If they need refinishing, do that instead.
Use rugs to break up the color of the wood instead of painting it.
I am prejudiced. I much prefer stained wood over painted wood. All my woodwork and doors are stained wood and floors are a mix of wood and carpet. The woodwork has not needed anything done to it in over 26 years, though there are some door frames that have some dings from certain people in the family moving large objects through them without being careful.
There are areas of the floor where the finish is worn, so we are eventually going to have to deal with that.
You would need an army of housekeepers and they would still not be able to deal with the inevitable scratches, chips and scuffing that will rapidly overwhelm any charm and turn this into something that looks more like the interior of a US Navy hospital ship and less like a glamorous movie set / magazine shoot.
REALLY ___ BAD ___ IDEA __ FOR ____ NORMAL ___ PEOPLE!!
Same thing with a floor that is too dark. With the trend these days with going with darker stained floors, they are as much of a nightmare to keep clean.. EVERYTHING shows on them.
If you wanted a certain look you could have your hardwood floors stenciled. Predominantly hard wood with a decorative stencil. It is not my cup of tea but a friend had it done in a beach cottage in Nantucket and it is a very eye catching, especially that it is really hard to ruin anything in Nantucket. Ah, the summer at the beach.
I wouldn't personally (if I had hardwood floors), but if somebody else likes hardwood floors painted white, has thought of the cleaning, maintenance, and effect on resale value, and still wants to paint them white, then they should do that, I suppose.
Painting floors white might detract from the home's value at resale.
If children, dogs, or many people will be crossing those floors frequently then I would be especially concerned about the cleaning and maintenance problems others have mentioned.
