Not a big sport in NZ but they have a couple of teams in Christchurch and a masters grade. The games are non-contact so that takes a few of the hits out of it so easier on the body. Am I aiming for a big fall, or should I just get out there and give it bash. Any thoughts, advice? How well should I be able to skate before attempting?

Go for it.If you're worried about skating there is also deck hockey. If you're not familiar with it,it consists of running instead of skating and a solid plastic ball instead of a puck.I played for about 6 seasons and it was my favorite.
