According to USA Hockey, Minnesota produces the most Division 1 hockey players, and that isn't even close. Currently, slightly more than 40% of Division 1 hockey players are Minnesotans.
Minnesota also has the highest number of players drafted by NHL teams every year, and it has been that way for some time. However, both Michigan and Massachussets produce quite a bit of hockey talent as well. Just not as much as Minnesota.
Not surprising though. If you look at last year's high school hockey rankings, Minnesota high school hockey teams absolutely dominate the rankings.
I think Michigan may be one of the top producers of hockey players, if not first. Almost every game the Red Wings play, Mickey Redmond and Ken Daniels do a great job of acknowledging the players from the opposing team with Michigan connections; some are Michigan natives, some are alumni of U-M, MSU, or MTU. Sometimes they have family in attendance, like Mike Modano; sometimes they even have pictures of youth hockey leagues or footage of college games.

NBC showed this yesterday: It could very well be MN, 30 NHL players playing at least 1 game this year, vs. 28 for MI.
That being said though, I'm not sure if MA. has more than MI or MN, they didn't say.
Minnesota (The State of Hockey) has the most just about every year then Mass then Mich , NEw York is fourth !, Minn one year mass another give or take! players born there nice try Mich! Warroad, Minnesota calls them selfs Hockey Town U.S.A. it's on their Water Tower and has been before Detroit ever has; and isn't Detroit a city not a town nice try again Mich! I'm from Minnesota and if Mass has the most player's that have came out of there that's fine but Minnesota would be 2nd then and Mich would still and always will be last! Go Gophers ! Kman75!
Massachusetts - If you took data from Central Scouting's Database on Place of Birth and/or a similar Database such as the NHLPA's put it in Microsoft Excel and select count, Massachusetts has put out the highest number of NHL players both per capita and overall. This is due to the Bobby Orr Effect, Prestigious Prep Schools, and the large amount of French Canadian influence on its population, and the fact that Massachussetts is one of the 3 richest states in the US - Hockey is not cheap. So Statistically - The road to the NHL for a North American player goes through "The Hub of Hockey" Boston Metro North and Boston Metro South, thats purely players raised in MA if you took the players that made the pros from MA schools it would be significantly higher. Statewise- Then it would be British Columbia, MN, NY, and MI. Try it out Download the data to Excel.
