That's what's always believed, the NBA fans don't follow the NHL and vice versa. It would be hard, anyway, due to the overlapping seasons and number of games in a long season.
Now that hockey is over, are some hockey fans tuning in? I don't follow the NBA, but it's so in-your-face that one must take notice.
I'm jealous that their playoffs have been more entertaining than hockey's, esp. these later sounds. Agree?
I think it all boils down to if someone likes basketball and hockey. I love hockey and don't care much for basketball. When I last followed basketball the '92 Dream Team was all the rage. My last NBA memory is John Starks headbutting Reggie Miller.
I don't follow the NBA. By default I would disagree that NBA playoffs are more exciting.
Hockey fans are notorious for hating on the NBA and basketball fans generally don't acknowledge that the NHL even exists. I myself am a fan of both leagues. The two are not mutually exclusive.
I've never had enough time to pay attention to the NHL precisely because the NBA gets in the way. Ideally they'd hold the playoffs between march madness and now...but I doubt either league would be willing to accomodate the other.
NBA over everything except the World Cup. League soccer comes next, the Superbowl after that...in my very humble opinion.
Lets take a look at it. Hockey is much more of a white fanbase. Basketball might be 50/50 or slightly more towards the black population. So that might sum it up a little. I'm white but like both sports almost equally. Honestly if I don't like the matchups, I don't watch either and with teams like the Islanders and Golden state Warriors as my teams, I frequently skip watching around playoff time.

That's absolutely not true ... both have a predominately white fanbase ... hockey a bit moreso, but basketball is no where close to 50/50, let along slightly more towards the black population
In the latest census the number who reported as "black only" was 38.9M with an additional 3.1M as "black in combination of one or more races" .... that's a black population of 42M or about 14% of the total population.
The overwhelming NBA fan is white, generally male as well ..... Scarborough Research does most of the demographic studies, but aside from an occasional press release they are pay studies and they have a partnership with many leagues (including the NBA)
The NBA has the highest percentage of black players, black have a higher percentage of their population invested into basketball .... however, the overall black population numbers aren't enough to swing it to being a league that is supported by the black fan
