It's official, Big Ten Hockey Conference to start in 2013-14 | StarTribune.com

Big Ten is going to add hockey as an official sport. I think its a good move, playing a home and away series with each team for 20 games 'in conference'.

I'm torn, b/c I'll miss the old WCHA with CC, Denver and Alak. Anchorage but am glad to see a balanced schedule.

I wonder where the above schools will play?

Great news. Maybe UAH can get back in a conference. Too bad they'll be stuck with scumbags who wouldn't take them before because Alabama is too far to travel while Alaska is not.

Purdue needs to step up and support the club hockey team, bump them up to D-I caliber and join the fun.

Purdue, Illinois, and N'Western all have club programs that with some help could get the bump. Unfortunately that may mean creating a girls sport for Title 9.

As a hockey fan and OSU supporter, I love this idea because I want them to play more games against Big Ten opponents, particularly Wisconsin and Minnesota. However I think this is going to hurt schools like Bowling Green, Miami, Western Michigan, etc. a little bit. Hopefully those schools can team up with the other left out schools and form a strong new conference.

Also, I'd love to see some other Big Ten schools pick up the sport, but I don't know of any that jumps out as a leading candidate. Maybe Illinois because of their consistently competitive club hockey program.

First season of B1G hockey regular season is almost done. Gophers need one point to clinch top seed for conf tournament.

Truth be told, several fans are really not been as excited about this season or the new format. Only 6 teams in the league and two are usually weak. Kind of miss playing the Souix and Denver in home and home series.

And they messed up the TV schedule...Gophers used to be exclusive on Fox. They lost that with B!G network and NBCSN.

As a Penn State Alum and huge hockey fan I'm just so excited and was happy to watch the Lions play some games in their first season in D1... although a tough year they played a lot of the top teams in the country and they even beat a couple of those squads.

They've got a great following... great arena... and it's only a matter of time before they start getting quality players who can help make this team a contender!

Would love a Northwestern Big Ten program for both men and women (sorry OP). They would draw a big Chicago/alum hockey fan base. Few collegiate IL teams (Robert Morris?) and who wants to cheer for Wisconsin? C'mon!

A new NU ice arena could probably easily sell open ice slots to local prep teams. Also lots of new construction on campus lake front - maybe room for a rink? And maybe other nearby big arena ice space available (e.g. Sears Ctr, Allstate).
