I have times where my brain goes completely blank about different things, I think we all do. I do think since you said this has been going on for about 5 years and you used to not be that way, that you should see your doctor and make sure everything is ok.
Alot of good suggestions already posted and ones I had thought were stress related and sleep deprived. One could think that they are getting sleep just because they put their head on the pillow and wake up several hours later, but maybe they have sleep apnea or other issues preventing them from getting the "full" sleep experience. Another possibility, had you fallen and hit your head at any time? Also, certain medications, prescribed or otherwise, could create brain fog.
I wouldn't expect anyone to remember their bank account numbers but if either the home or cell number (whichever you use the most) doesn't come to you by the end of the day, probably wouldn't hurt to make an appointment to see your family doctor and they might even refer you to um, see I'm even forgetting the type of doctor and I'd been to one before. Had the name before I started typing all this. Rgggh. One similar experience I had a few years ago, I had walked with a co-worker to the atm and all of a sudden I totally forgot my pin number. Luckily I had not inserted my card so I didn't have the ultimate bad day of having a card get stuck in the machine too. I like the new swipe kind of atms, 'cuz if you do forget, you can always hit cancel.
Other suggestions for keeping the mind sharp are the previously suggested crossword puzzles, other word games, trivia, card games. Brain games (Nintendo) and Lumosity.com. That reminds me to get back on that. I don't get to doing it every day like I probably should. Best wishes to you.
Have you ever noticed any other symptoms? Slurred speech... blurred vision... headaches... unusual muscle twitches?
With symptoms like these, it might be indicative of a neurological disorder, but it might not be anything serious; if it's an ongoing concern, perhaps a visit to your internist/neurologist might be in order...
Go to a doctor. It's likely nothing (for instance, I had a fight with the front door of the place I have worked for 2 1/2 years yesterday - it has always been "push" but I was pulling and tugging on it... just a symptom of too little sleep having worked an event until late the night before) but in the case that it's something, you want to get it checked out.
My dad has been having lapses in his memory for awhile. We finally got him to the doctor - he has had a "silent stroke" and has early-onset Alzheimers. Had he gone to a doctor 5 years ago when these symptoms first started, he could have been put on medication and monitored. Now, he has irreversible brain damage and no longer qualifies for SSDI because he has not worked in so long due to his inability to focus. Don't wait!
I don't have a family doctor or insurance so I'll be paying out of pocket. Do you guys still think seeing a doctor is necessary?
