Are the YMCAs any good in this area? I am looking to go for my workouts as well as activities with my 3 year old daughter. Is one location better than another? Any feedback is much appreciated.

What city are you in? It probably makes a big difference depending on your location. My wife and I looked at the Y in Great Bridge in Chesapeake and were not impressed at all. Their gym equipment was very old and the free weight area was in this little tiny room. Plus they were expensive, think it was $48 individual and $75 for a family. If you have kids, maybe it is a better deal as they have a nice pool and probably lots of activities. But unless you plan on using that stuff I don't think it is worth the money.

The Y on South Blvd. in Va Bch is very nice and very, very modern. If you are looking at cost, you may want to check out the rec centers. I believe it's 48 a year.

It's changed a bit since you've been here.

The Y in Great Bridge just underwent a million dollar plus renovation that added more space and updated some other parts. I don't know how anybody can say it is old. The Y wasn't that old to begin with and with the renovation, it is gorgeous. I've been to many gyms in my life and was quite impressed with the Great Bridge Y when I saw it. If you have kids, the pools are fantastic, as is the indoor playground. The only thing that might be bad there is that there aren't alot of classes or nonsports related activities. They have plenty of swim lessons, some family nights and kids sports, but if you are looking for arts related activities or that sort of thing, there isn't much of that at the Great Bridge Y. The Blocker Y in Norfolk is also amazing. It's probably the fanciest Y I have ever seen in my life. Fantastic for working out...I'm not sure about the kid activities. I was not impressed by the Mount Trashmore Y as a facility. It is old and has a lot of old equipment--large racks of rusty old weights. This facility though does have much more classroom space, so it does have more kid activities. However, it doesn't have the indoor playground and other such facilities that really stand out at other Y's. I've only been in the Greenbrier Y once, and it was nice but I wasn't there long enough to judge it. If you sign up for the Y, you can visit any of the facilities though. It is expensive for a family, but if you are planning on really using your membership, it's worth it.

Thank you all for the responses. I'll be located in Norfolk, but I like the option of going to either if I wanted to with the membership.

I visited the Y in Williamsburg today and was amazed at all the kids and activities going on. Day camp for the kids in addition to all the parents there. The tots where so busy in the room playing with the counselors too. It seemed like a neat Y.
