My wife and I are thinking about moving from Colorado to Virginia. Our son lives in Portsmouth and we would like to live within about 30 minutes of there. We would rent at first, but eventually would like to buy a home.
We can spend up to about $300,000. Also, my wife works in accounts payable and would need to look for a job. We would need to be within commuting distance (also about 30-35 minutes) to an employment area.

As we don't really know the area, any help would be appreciated.

Depending upon the time of day and traffic, out side of those times there are many areas 30 mins from Portsmouth. I can make it from Mt. Trashmore to the Shipyard within 20 min. at the times before heavy traffic begins. There are some nice homes in Va beach and the Norfolk areas for the price you can afford, even in Portsmouth near the old Coast Guard station.

Find the job(s) first then decide where to live...you probably would want to have a commute that is against the norm if it involves going through/over a bridge or tunnel.

You might want to look into Suffolk depending on where in Portsmouth your son is. There is a lot of new development off of 664 that would fit your requirements.
