I'm not so sure. I think we could take a cue from the Swiss...

Why no one invades Switzerland

When lawful citizens of the USA are denied the right to keep and bear arms freedom is lost. That make the USA a worse place, not a better one.

As you can see, banning drugs totally took away our drug problem here in the US, especially in cities like LA and Detroit. Therefore, if we banned guns, they would magically disappear as well. /sarcasm

Americans have been raised for about the past century to place high values on independence, autonomy, and personal decisions- regardless of where we place on the political spectrum, nearly everybody in America has the ideal of "freedom" implanted in our heads. The Swiss on the other hand are a socialist (not using that as a derogatory term) nation that believes in collectivism, the "good of the whole", and other things. They weren't involved in major world wars, don't have as diversified or large a populace or economy as ours, are largely isolationist (which we should be, but that's another topic, and basically have entirely different attitudes about life than we do. There would be a ridiculous outlash if you were to ban guns for the simple fact that people already have them.

It is like comparing apples to oranges and would never work in our complex, vast society.

If it became illegal to own guns in America, every half-way intelligent gun owner would make up a bunch of bogus handwritten receipts for guns he has sold, and nobody would be in possession of ANY firearms when the ATF or whomever came knocking. Furthermore, people are allowed to own guns legally, because felons and criminals own them ILLEGALLY. The day you tell law-abiding citizens that they have to endure physical assault or the possibility of rape or murder, while waiting for police to show up, IF they were able to call the slow-go-5-0, there will be a revolt and uproar of the sorts you have NEVER seen.

All the "peaceable" folk wanting to ban and/or restrict guns should be made to go gather up all the guns which are owned by the criminals and wannabe crims.

Once they prove to me that all the thugs are disarmed I just might think about handing in mine....maybe.

Since that will never happen I'm off to buy some ammo before there is another price increase.

No, then the criminals will still have guns.. The best way to stop crime is to put the criminals in jail and just leave them there. If you use any weapon in the act of a crime, not in self defence, but in a crime you should get life no paroll and just stay there.
ban paroll!

Those who beat their guns into plowshares will plow for those who don't. I will give up my guns only after giving up my life.

Mahi...yum...ahi...yum ....ono (good!) MAJOR yum. Taking your screen name from the three tastiest fish in the Pacific ocean....interesting, but I digress. This is a kinda redundant thread, the other is pretty long now, and I'm thinkin' most of what can be discussed here has already been said, but, what the Hell. It is the dream of the leftists to see the US a 'gun free' country, their arguments for this are old and tired, and don't hold water, yet still, they howl. Cting stats on child deaths from firearms, violent crime problems, gangs etc as their basis for disarming US citizens. "If it saves JUST ONE life" it is worth nullifying the 2nd amendment. OK, well, what about the lives that are saved by BEING armed? So maybe a two legged vermin lost his, so what. Is it really such a great loss? No. Some creep breaks into a home, the thought of rape and muder on his mind, his 'disease' is cured by a 230 grain cranial injection at 900 fps, end of problem. The people who count are still alive and well, thanks to proficiency with firearms. So, "If it saves just ONE life, it is worth it to be armed. Yes? I think so................

Well seeing as gun ownership keeps rising at an unprecedented rate, Stats allowing concealed carry is increasing all the time and the crime rate according to the FBI keeps dropping, I'd say a gun-free USA would be a disaster. I know it's a cliché but the old saying "When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns" is quite true. Look at Washington DC. 30 years of almost total gun bans and it was the leading US city for violent crime over and over again. No. More guns =less crime. It's a stubborn fact.

Gun free, as in no guns in existence?

How would that make the country better? We would not be free from the tyrannical British empire were it not for brave men willing to tell the king where to stick his crown, and willing to back it up with rifles. In the frontier days, firearms made it easier to obtain meat for sustenance. And even now, there are many people who enjoy the sports associated with firearms. To them, a gun free USA would certainly not be a better place.

To the elderly, and those less physically able than the strongest brutes, it definitely would not be a better place, as firearms are the great equalizer between the strong and the weak. After all, what is to prevent the strong from lording over the weak if the weak stand no chance at stopping the attack?

I guess my answer is a resounding NO, the country would not be a better place without firearms. Firearms do not require brute strength to wield in self defense. Ensuring that the weak can fend off attacks from the stronger.
