I thought about this many times, have a rich country adopt a poor country, it wouldnt be so much a colony but a ward.we would get some of the natural resources and they hopefully would stabilize into a safe peaceful country. The ward country to have to completely agree to this.might not be a bad idea but then again the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
The OP hasn't posted since January 2017 so I'll take a stab. Britain is, by virtue of its hand-in-glove alliance with the U.S., Canada, Australia and other countries that speak its language and share its heritage of good government a major world power. Further background is in Colonialism v. Immigration v. National Borders v. Compassion - What's the Solution?
I would argue that almost all the African countries, the Middle Eastern countries except Israel, and Asian countries excluding Singapore and arguably India were better off under colonial rule. Except of course for the ruling class in each of these countries.
Thanks for stepping in for me. You are spot on.
Precisely my point. Add to that the outflow of people from these countries who are not equipped to live in the civilized world. The original migrants may be quiescent in their new countries based on gratefulness for escaping the chaos and mayhem of anarchic, totalitarian societies. Their children feel rootless and unmoored in the West, leading to results such as this: Westminster car crash: Man arrested on suspicion of terror offences.
A First World society cannot operate with continual incidents of this type so yes, this is our business.
Give it back to Spain. They have more cultural ties to the island and might appreciate it more.
Not the point. The point is we signed onto make them part of our country, then failed them miserably and treated them like outliers. If we can't even keep our end of the bargain with a very small island, what business do we have gaining more countries?
Don't forget too, once we make someone a territory or whatever, they can now come and go to the U.S. as they please. I don't think the current political climate would allow this.

As if we have the right to take it or give it away. Deplorable.
