I would love to hear from someone who has retired to Athens by choice, not just stayed there after retirement. We are thinking of moving there to take advantage of the tuition waiver for seniors. Any one do that or have some advice about moving there (but not to a retirement community. I would rather live under a bridge!)

OK. I'm retired. Live in Athens since 1994 except for a 2 year move to North GA.

I believe you have to be at least 65 for the tuition waiver and it is my understanding that the instructor has to approve your attendance. But, not sure on either of those.

Feel free to ask questions. You can run a search on this forum and find a lot of Athens Q and A stuff.

There is a lot for sale in the region. Depends on what you want and can afford like anywhere else. We have two large medical facilities and tons of physicians. No idea what finding a doctor is like who is taking on new Medicare patients. For "big health issues" we have Emory University some 70 miles or less away.

I do think there are other college towns that are nicer such as Chapel Hill. Athens, the "Classic City" has lost some of its class in my opinion. Too many students for the area and also too much public housing which are hotbeds of crime etc.

The adjacent county, Oconee, is more upscale and "safe". However, surrounding counties do not have the services that you find in Athens-Clarke County. If you dial 911 in ACC you get help and fairly quickly. Do that in the other counties and you might wait awhile. I think we get more for our tax money by far.

Again, ask questions. Good luck.

I think Athens is a great place -- especially for the young, and the young-at-heart. Not so much for the middle-aged if interested in a profesisonal career.

The 2 hospitals in Athens are a great resource, and with large numbers of medical offices near them. I think you would go to Atlanta for extremely specialized tests, etc.

I started this thread a while back:
"The best seat in the South" - Athens, Georgia

I would say that Athens is defintely worth atleast a visit for checking it out.
