I have never seen them on the West Coast, and saw some when we went to Wisconsin one summer. I thought they were cool looking at night. I haven't noticed them in any other states I have been to(Washington, Oregon, California, Utah, Hawaii, Nevada, Florida, Idaho, etc) and was just wondering where they distribute and what states I can expect to see them in if I were to travel across the country some day.
Someone once told that generally, you don't see fireflies (or as we say in my family, "lightning bugs") west of Kansas. I found that to be true. I've seen them in TN, MO, SC, GA and even in Florida (panhandle). They need humidity, lots of moisture/water and woods.
