These five cities are arguably the hottest cities in the country right now and possibly the best and most exciting places to live if you are a twentysomething. For those who can't move to Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Austin, or Boston, do you envy those who do live there? What is keeping you from moving to one of the above cities?
Portland: I live here and do not understand it's allure. Seriously.
Seattle: Wouldn't live there if my life depended on it.
San Francisco: Love the city but do NOT envy the people that pay for the cost of living. And it's cold.
Austin: Lived there in the 70's and never wanted to go back.
Boston: Never been there but would like to visit. But it isn't my kind of climate.
So, no, I have absolutely no desire or envy regarding those cities. However, I'm NOT a twentysomething. In my 20's is when I lived in Austin and when I moved to Portland. But early-to-mid 20's is when I would have loved to live in San Francisco, before the city boomed in population and cost of living.
Portland, Seattle, and Austin are always included in the 'Hip 5' but some lists include Minneapolis and Denver rather than San Francisco and Boston.
Minneapolis and Denver are definitely rising stars and are on track to become the great cities of the next decade and take their rightful place with the Hip 5 mentioned in my OP. I envy people who live in Minneapolis and Denver as well.
Whose "hip 5?" I would like to see other lists besides yours. You tout these cities so much, I wonder why you do not live in one of them. I know it isn't easy to relocate long distance. I have done it myself. But I would think that anyone who was so unhappy in their own city as you appear to be would find a way to move to one that would make them a lot happier.
Why spend your time envying people in other places? Life is too short to be doing that. Reading the replies to your original query, most people do not envy others living in these cities which makes sense. To be envious of so many people living in so many other places is just not healthy.
I don't get this obsession with "hip" either. I think it's more a situation of "hype."
Boston and San Francisco are both cities which have a lot of substance to back up whatever positive coverage they get. However, the other three are largely in the spotlight due to the significant amount of pop-culture hype they receive.

Yeah, but the OP knows like 5 people who moved to Portland(though he's never been there himself) and 3 who moved to Seattle and couple people who moved to Austin, so it's a sore subject for him and one that he'll consist in bringing it up ad nauseum across this forum...

Yep - the Pacific NW is too rainy and gloomy for me, I love SF but not enough to pay the outrageous prices to live there, Austin - no, thanks - I'm from Nashville originally so have already lived the "hip" music scene thing, Boston - no, I hate cold weather. And I haven't been a 20-something for some time now. I live in Los Angeles and my only complaint is the traffic - I'd take it over every city on your list in a heartbeat.

What's so wrong about being envious of my friends who have gone to Portland? It really is a beautiful city. I am actually going to try to take a trip there within the next year or two.
