The West hands down has the best balance of geography/scenery and urbanity.

Its no contest.

As a Northeasterner myself, the Northeast city/scenery wise is largely all the same. Boston, NYC, Philly, DC, etc.

You do not get the geographical diversity in the East as you do in the West.

Flat out.

This is not controversial. Most people in any region of the U.S. would agree, especially those who have seen the east and west coasts.

Here's a drive where you can traverse many micro climates and regions diverse in a way I cannot think of on the East Coast. I present to you the Columbia River Gorge:

I-84 East (OR), Columbia River Gorge, Part 1 of 2, Mile 18 To Mile 53 - YouTube

It's a nice drive, but the only change is some stretches of road have more evergreens. Otherwise, I don't see the microclimates and diverse regions and the music freaks me out.

People are generally friendly

I hate the western u.s sometimes because of its heat and its lack of major history. It seems like the pnly cities with any real history dating back before the 1900's are SF, seattle, denver and LA but only sf seems to have a good amount of it.
Most of that is fine. Deserts, however, are certainly nothing to brag about and I have lived in CA for 40+ years now.

Broad brush there, geek. Thousands of foreign visitors to Death Valley, Joshua Tree and Palm Springs obviously see something you can't.

Deserts like Joshua Tree can be beautiful, especially when they are flowering. But I do agree with Chessgeek, to me the large areas of deserts and other arid lands of the West are a negative. Large parts of the West would also be far more attractive if they had more rivers and lakes.

Three things about I like about the West.

1. The dramatic and majestic mountains. And not just one range but multiple range and scattered locations throughout all the West (including Alaska and Hawaii).

2. Vast amounts of public lands.

3. the great amount of wildlife from Bison, Elk, Bighorn Sheep, California Sea Lions, Pronghorn Antelopes, Cougars, Mountain Goats, etc.
