Just moved into a home about 4 months ago. We have big front yard (around 18,000 square feet). We had to take down a tree that died from insects so now the yard is really open.

We are set back 200 feet from the road so we have a lot of room to play with...want a couple trees that do not grow super big (thinking 20-25 feet max) since I don't want to cause any issues of roots growing towards the driveway or near our septic system.

Looking for thoughts on a tree that will stand the New England weather, not grow too big and looks nice.

Saw Hybrid Poplar, Autumn Blaze Maples online that looked nice.

Thanks in advance

I had an Autumn Blaze Maple in Memphis. Loved it! Pretty tree with gorgeous fall color, even in the mid-south where there isn't a lot of vivid color. Grows moderately fast and doesn't drop a lot of 'trash'. Withstood a couple of nasty ice storms too.

I suggest the tree wizard at Trees - Arbor Day Foundation

Even if you don't want to buy bare-root saplings for your yard, their tree tips and tree selection are great. You enter your zip code to get started so that you get zone-appropriate trees.

The Arbor Day Foundation (<--- tree wizard)

You can also contact your local county extention agent for advice :-)

If you have the time to enjoy planting and watching them grow, I really suggest buying the bare-root saplings :-)

If you live in a sheltered valley location I would also recommend a silver maple. The yellow foliage during fall is incredible.

You didn't say exactly where you live, but check your plant zone before making any decisions:
