Help.

My son has a Ford Explorer SUV that's been making a loud whining sound when the engine is running, whether moving or standing still. Giving it the gas to 3000 RPM seemed to "kick it back" to a normal sound for awhile. I asked him if he checked the transmission fluid but he hasn't; he was told that you can't check the fluid without taking it to a shop because there is no "dip stick." Anyway, last night the whining sound didn't go away and there was a burning smell to the vehicle.

Does anyone have an idea - I think the SUV may be low or even out of transmission fluid, but I'm not the most mechanically inclined person around.

Thanks.

You're going to have to help more. A year and engine would really help you get help here. You're at least lucky that Exploders with manual trans are essentially non-existant, so we have that much of a clue as to what you're pointing to...

I have a '08 Explorer, the new 6 speed autos do not have a dip stick. Sounds as thou a cowling is loose or the fan belt is not self tightening.

You can find more specific help at www.explorerforum.com, good group of guys that know more than I do about explorers.

I saw your post in the Vegas forum--I just put an offer in on a repair shop off Trop and I15. I don't charge for most diagnostic procedures. Some later model cars have to have a scan tool hooked up, then you check the trans fluid at 120 degrees. And there is no dipstick--you unscrew a bolt and fill it up till it runs out. I've been working on cars for 25 years and it really makes me pessimistic--things should get easier and better engineered over the years. Instead, some areas, like lack of a dipstick, have gotten worse. And don't get me started on gas mileage--I owned a 1983 Honda Civic that got 43+. And I have a 1974 LTD that gets 14--and now we have trucks 35 years later that get almost the same (and the LTD is probably just as heavy as most trucks).

Anyway, send me a message if I can help you out.

Seriously? There is no dipstick!!?? I could not do without a tranny dipstick. I periodically check the condition and level of the fluid even when they are operating fine... thats absurd they got rid of them.

yeah agree they should have one but without one it just makes it more dealer dependant so now you have to take it in to get the fluids checked.

It's a sealed system, only the oil for a dip stick. My wife's truck same year with a 4 speed has both dip sticks.

Remove the serpentine drive belt and start vehicle momentarily and see if noise goes away, this will eliminate belt noise or any compinet driven by yje belt. If noise goes away, I would look to the belt as the cause, but pay special attention to the crankshaft pulley as they tend to come apart on this vehicle. A power steering pump could also be the problem. As far as checking the trans fluid, not really a big deal. On the trans pan you will find a nut that is attached to an internal stand pipe, inside this nut you will find a torx plug that needs to be removed, once removed fluid should drip out indicating that fluid is at the top of the stand-pipe indicating full. You could also be hearing a frozen cooling fan clutch, once again noise would go away with belt removal, with engine not running you should be able to manually spin the cooling fan, it shoul spin a few times. I hope this info helps...I am a ford tech, have worked at the same dealer for 22 years.

Any Explorer with a six speed should still be under warranty, take it in. Mine has the bumper to bumper 100k warranty.
