The cars that look good so far are the Taurus Wagon itself (deprecated model), the Volvo V series, VW Passat Wagon, and Suburu Legacy Wagon (although this is a little smaller than the rest)
The Taurus/Sable are still fairly easy to find and get serviced. The Saturn L300 is a forgotten cheap wagon that might work for you, although they're not plentiful. The Passat wagon is hard to find and has a reputation for being difficult and expensive to maintain/service.
I really like the Dodge Magnum. Real fun to drive. But to put the difference in cargo area in perspective, the Dodge Magnum has 27 cu ft, while the 1994-200x Taurus Wagons ranged from 37 cu ft to 39 cu ft.
The Ford Flex has only 20 cu ft. CTS has 25 Cu Ft.

According to the Ford Flex website, the 20 cu ft is if all seats are up. If you lower the third and second row then the cargo goes up to 83.2 cu ft. With the Magnum rear seat down, it's 71.6 cu ft.

Great info. Thx. Do you know of a site where I can compare cargo with the seats down? That info can be useful to me.
Find a 2000ish Taurus with the 24v engine in it. Mine passed last year at 250k. I ran into the same issues. I found a 2003 Oldsmobile Silhouette that was the perfect replacement for mine ( I removed the 2nd and 3rd row seats ). I found the rare version that was AWD and had automatic height control for hauling stuff inside. Also the power doors come in real handy. Found it on Ebay for about 5k with 72k miles.
First thing that came to my mind is a Subaru Outback; specifically a Legacy-based Outback rather than an Impreza-based Outback Sport. If you're asking why not just a Legacy Wagon if I'm recommending a Legacy-based Outback, the answer is the Outbacks are much easier to find. Otherwise, it's six of one and half-dozen of the other unless a little extra ground clearance matters to you -- which I'm guessing it doesn't if you had a Taurus.
Are you looking to buy new or used? What price range?
Gotta love those Taurus wagons, I have 3 out front right now, 2 95s and an 02. I'd maybe look at a Subaru Tribeca, it's at the top of your price range, though.
How about a pick up with a cap?
