Got a 99 Expedition XLT with the 4.6 Triton.
Has about 195k on it.

Stars and runs fine. Occasional idol jumps, never stalls.
Has power issues when hitting the gas, so I put in new plugs & PCV valve. Ran sweet for about 500 miles, like new.

Now it is back to the same problem. It will start and run fine, never stalls, but it will give a sputter when you hit the gas to accel. But not always, it would run on the highway for a min, then slight sputter, then be ok. Never anything that would affect the speed, but felt.

So I gave it some fuel injector cleaner. Jumped on the highway & within 5 miles it ran fine, no issues. After another 500 miles or so, same problem. Put in fuel injector cleaner and the problem went away.

Got any thoughts here on the issue? I just picked this up cheap, so I dont have any real history on it.

Thanks!
Jason

I would replace the fuel filter regardless of the other problem.
If that doesn't help then have the fuel pump checked.
If thats OK then consider injector replacement and or spark plug wires.
With that many miles it could be many things.

Check fuel pressure. These motors have misfire issues, from injectors to coils to broken valve springs.

Ooopsie!

1999 Tritons don't have plug wires. They use COP ignition (Coil on Plug) with can go bad without tripping a Check Engine Light. YOu can grab a set of ten for about $10 per on Ebay via Global Automotive, if that company is still in biz. Don't know for sure, since the v5 in my '03 F150 uses DIS with one coil pack...

Any chance the head pipes on the exhaust turn bright orange? If so the cat(s) is clogged.

Huh! My 97 Triton had plug wires. I just assumed the 99s did too. Gawd - I'm sooo behind the times.

Swapped the fuel filter and rode around town. That took care of about 2/3 of it. Pretty good actually.

For the wires, that seems easy and cheap. Is there an exact name for these as any words on ebay with Spark Plug Coil Wires dont bring up much.

thanks!
