No rhyme or reason, but it will be on, then off. Sometimes if I whack the dash top above it, it pops on.

Any ideas? Hoping it is as simple as a loose wire and I pull a part of the dash out to reconnect. I am not losing mileage. Its a 99 expedition with 195k on it.

thanks!

Can I assume the odo is digital? If so you may just have a bad soldering connection for the board. My friend had a similar problem with the dome lights in his Audi. Several of the solders on the control board had over-heated and worn out, causing a touchy connection. He was able to re-solder the bad connections and they've worked flawlessly since.

Cool. It is as simple as taking the dash apart and finding the wire & following down to a board?

Yes and no...the clusters are generally installed as a unit. When you remove it, you will be holding a sealed cluster. You can open it up and try to find the loose connection, but I wouldn't do that without a schematic. The other option is to just buy a replacement cluster if it bothers you.

It won't be so easy. There could be a bad ground, but you will need to trach and trace the unit on the borad to discover what each circuit is, and find a gang ground probably. That might not do it either. Next would be searching for cold solder joints or high resistance melted joints, which can be daunting as a task. One buy one, figuring out which printed circuit does what and goes where, and many times there is no paper versions to go by.

The unit itself could be on it's last legs. These things can drive some people right off the deep end.

Or you could get lucky and fine a connector gone green all mung and goo. Clean that up well and be all set.

Yeah 'instrument cluster'.

Loose wire? Nope. It will be a broken connector cured with some solder.

What you mean is that it accumulates miles, but the display goes out. Is that correct? If there is a button to change the display from total to trip, maybe some electronic contact cleaner in the button will work its way in and clear a fouled contact.
