Erm...so, I don't actually make potato salad but have had plenty of it - hot german vinegary as well as lots of mayo types. I do like mustard in potato salad but...umm...I don't even think of ANY kind of pickle being in there Celery, onion, mayo, mustard...uhhh...dunno what else - but not relish or pickles <scrunching nose>

Kats, pretty please can I still be your friend and come over so you can feed me all your OTHER wonderful southern food creations?

As a kid and if I had a choice, I always chose the hot German-style potato salad. However having lived in FL for 35+ years, one's only choice seems to be the doctored-up mayo style. And, I've grown to like it; but, please add dry mustard to the dressing.

Made a nice post and accidentally tossed it!! Let's just say everything I've seen called German potato salad was bland , dry. yuckem's I'll write down the recipe next time I make the Gold potato salad. To be eaten warm. Mustard (wet) not powder dryness........ mayo, eggs, celery, onion, bell pepper, DILL Pickles, green olives. OMG ,.. Salt and pepper to taste. Throw out the rest of the meal!!!
Potato salad without eggs would be garnished potatoes. What do you all put in Deviled eggs?? Miracle Whip?? Dill pickles ..best sellers world wide with more uses than any other!! I rest my case!!

The cutest are the tiny sweet ones. I prefer straight dills, not Kosher. I remember sour pickles, but haven't seen them in ages. As for potato salad. Have little containers of pickles, and let people decide what they want. I love paprika on my "tater salet." And mayo, not salad dressing. A scoche of minced sweet onion.

Real german potato salad is served warm and is not dry and is quite flavorful - usually stronger flavored than a cold mayo po salad. It has some vinegary-ness to it. You should like it since mustard has vinegary-ness and strong flavor too.

Ya know, I probably would - if I had to. Even though overall I prefer dill and half-sours and that kind of pickle. Hmmm. Maybe some top notch fried okra will help me mull it over and decide

Vinegar is good for salad dressings and so is Mayo!!! Minced ..any onion will do in Po salad. More than a scoche needed. Vote Dill Toosie ..do not give in to the sweet (dark) side. Paprika or cayenne are for deviled eggs not po salad. LOL
