Just wondering how long should opened jars of salad dressing, marinara sauce, jam/jelly, peanut butter, olives, etc. last in the fridge?

I get worried once some of these items hit seven days.

But I hate throwing out salad dressing after a week. it gets too expensive to buy more.

I'd imagine peanut butter, jams, jellies are good for over a month?

What about sour cream, cottage cheese, or olives and pickles once opened? Dairy seems good only up to a week.

I realize the answers depends on your level of risk.

Thanks.

As long they pass a visual and taste test. That works for me and I never got sick because of it.
Here is a guideline written by government ( and supposed to be used in restaurants, hospital/school cafeterias and such public places )
http://www.foodsafety.gov/keep/charts/storagetimes.html
However in your own home, you just do a visual/smell and taste test. You will discover that food stays way longer, and there is no need to discard perfectly good food because someone told you.

A WEEK for salad dressing? Are you kidding me??
Who eats enough salad in a week to use up a bottle of dressing? Man, I'd hate to see your grocery bill!
Have you noticed these items have an expiration date on them?

It all depends on the the type of dressing, but it usually lasts for many months in my fridge. Peanut butter? I've never refrigerated it. It last forever on the panty self. Sour cream? until it's green and furry. Marinara, I don't know. I've never tried to keep an opened jar. We usually eat it all in one sitting. Pickles? Indefinitely. I've kept jars for years in the fridge and never had a problem. Heck, with cheese, even it gets a little mold on it, just cut the mold off and it should be fine unless it's gotten dried out.

Anything with vinegar, like salad dressing and pickles pretty much last almost indefinitely. The vinegar preserves it.

If marinara does not have any meat or dairy in it, that can keep quite a while as well, I have probably gone close to a month with tomato sauces open in my fridge just fine.

Dairy, other than hard cheeses, butter or yogurt seems to go off after about a week.

Thanks for all the replies.

I tried giving rep points, but "you've given too many rep points in past 24 hours....try again later appears." Huh? Have never seen that. I wasn't trying to give it all to one person, either.

Weird....

I have two teens and college kid that comes home everyonce in a while. They could empty a bottle in a weekend.

BTW during the summer we have a small salad with just about every dinner.

And well you should. The vinegar acts as a preservative; it's good for at least six months. Probably longer, the more vinegary it is.

Pickles are OK until they feel slippery.

You'll know when peanut butter gets rancid, but it will take awhile. More than a month.

Jellies and jams -- until you see mold on the surface. Ditto with marinara sauce, or until it smells funky.
