Thankfully I do live with someone who appreciates my treats! He'll always ask for my Strawberry-Lemonade or Banana-Cream-Pie cupcakes before he asks to get something at the store. There's one particular gingery molasses kind of cookie that I find at the store around Christmas that I just LOVE... but I'd still pick homemade treats any day!
When I was a kid, my mom baked all the time and we were heavy eaters of sugary foods but never gained weight. Same with our family but now, older, we have cut back. The major issue are the preservatives and more importantly, the corn syrup. If you do some research on corn syrup, they have it in everything now and it is a major player in the obesity epidemic. We'll stay with homemade and now with raw cookies and desserts in our healthier diet. We use agave and dates to sweeten our desserts now.
i am no expert on nutrition, but from what i can see, using real butter will give the fat your body craves, and therefore you dont need as many cookies. humans need fat! use a bit of fat at every meal and your body will feel conforted and satiated.
Generally speaking, real food in moderate, healthful amounts is vastly preferable, from a health standpoint, to gorging one's self on synthetic food substitutes. Also more enjoyable.
I love homemade cookies. I make a cookie with cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar and fresh rapsberry jam, that melts in your mouth with delciousness. Nothing store bought compares.
Well I tried to make homemade sugar cookies today, but it was difficult getting the softened butter to dissolve and spread in the bowl with the flour, sugar etc. Should I have left it out longer to where it's almost melted?

Get it out first thing so it has time to soften. I don't think it has to dissolve or melt, you just cut it into the flour with a fork. It should be somewhat soft, not hard like it is when you take it out of the fridge. (I could be wrong; I've never made sugar cookies.)
I've had store bought cookies but they are usually hard, like stale cookies, and they have a funny taste. Probably all the preservative junk that is added to give them a longer shelf life.
Home made chocolate chip cookies are fun. I haven't made them in a while, don't need the calories or sugar, but we always just used the recipe on the Nestles chocolate chip bag.
