I am looking for a nice area to move to in south west Florida from the North East. I am 24 years old moving with my girlfriend who is a teacher looking for a good school district to work in. We are looking for a safe area with many activities as well as many employment opportunites for myself. Any input on where to move to would be great...Sarasota, Fort Myers, Tampa...etc

Tampa has the most affordable housing of the 3 you mentioned. I think that's your best bet.

Sarasota pays the teachers more. I would look at Bradenton,or Venice areas. They are close to Sarasota, small town feel.(at least they used to be) Anyone from Venice or Sarasota here? Fort Myers is overcrowded now. Someone told me today it took two hours to get to town from Fort Myers Beach!

I am also interested in the St. Pete and clearwater area but don't want to spend half of my day in traffic

Your too young for Venice. The town shuts down after 9pm

Sarasota does pay more, but cost of living in Bradenton/Sarasota/Venice is WAY more. Also, the above poster is correct, most of the area is retiree or tourist oriented and is also extremely congested. I would recommend somewhere in the Tampa Bay area for you. If you like coastal, try St. Pete - great town, beats Sarasota et al into the dirt. But only if you can get employment with not too much commute. If you find a job in Tampa, I would recommend the outskirts of Tampa for housing. Good luck!

Default Cost of Housing in Cape Coral

So what are the realistic prices in Cape Coral and surounding areas?
What is a "fair" price for a gulf access house or lot?
What are the builders up to? Is anyone building now?
Are there any good builders left?
Prices seem to be all over the map.
Is anything selling?

It is a buyers market now. Prices are coming down a bit. Condos are going up all over the place in Fort Myers, no one to buy them all! No roads to drive on if they do!
The gulf access homes are pretty high, over 4k-8k. Crazy market!

Sarasota and Charlotte counties are about to allocate teachers around due to student populations/schools. I know here in Charlotte where I am a teacher, our school enrollment numbers are down and many teachers will lose their positions and be shuffled around to other grades. Yes, there is the class-size amendments, but many people cannot afford it here and they are moving and taking their kids with them. Several schools are hundreds below predictions. Sarasota says they will not lay-off, but eventually they will have to face the fact that school enrollment is down.

Pick an area that is GROWING because last hired will be the first ones walking.

Exclamation the truth hurts sometimes

You sound like a reasonably well-to-do young american with an education. The first thing to do is go to a place like city-data.com and look up stats on the city you are looking at.
A lot of bleeding-heart liberals will start calling you racist when you start talking about racial demographics, but as a sane person, keep it in mind. Take Fort Myers, FL with 49% white/33% black/14% hispanic. Unless you are a gang-banger yourself, living in areas with that many blacks denotes crime.
Trust me, I have friends from all walks of races, I'm not racist, and crime statistics DO NOT LIE. Fort Myers BEACH, FL however is 95% white, probably pretty safe to live there. FYI, Sarasota is 69% white.
But maybe you do like bass-booming cars "rollin' down da street" at all hours of the night, screaming from domestic violence, and burglary around you...
