I'll get the ball rolling with the 2005 movie Boynton Beach Club, directed by Susan Seidelman, a romantic comedy (sort of, but also with its sad and poignant moments) about older South Florida characters losing loved ones and sometimes finding new relationships. Great ensemble acting. A definite Florida feel to it.

Anyone else have a favorite Florida-themed movie or book to recommend?

This has always been my favorite movie about Florida. Much of it was filmed where I now live.
It's kind of long, so you might want to take your time watching it.

Sunshine State
A woman and her new husband returns to her hometown roots in coastal northern Florida, and must deal with family, business, and encroaching real estate development.

One can't mention modern Florida literature (fiction) and not mention Carl Hiaasen. His series of crime books featuring everyday characters as detectives are must-reads, and funny as hell with characters you swear you live next door to.

In terms of TV shows, I'd vote for The Golden Girls. The cast/writing was phenomenal and subject matter dealt with (often with just the right mix of humor) were years ahead of time in many instances and in my opinion helped open up public dialogue about such topics as AIDS, homelessness and healthcare. The Florida perspective was often a focus and helped shape the point of view as well.

I've got a good one I remember from mini-series era of TV in the 1980s. It was one of the disaster movies .
Condominium was based on a John D. McDonald novel ..........about a new high rise condo built shoddily so contractor made more money so full of scandal etc. . It of course gets hit by a hurricane so there is the typical hurricane party of residents who refused to leave and of course the high rise is destroyed. .

As for current TV......Glades is filmed in a warehouse in Pembroke Park and is filmed entirely in south Florida around Ft. Lauderdale and surrounding areas.

Another good one....... Summer Rental with John Candy was filmed mostly on St. Pete's beach. its a funny movie which takes on the tourist-local attitude .

A Land Remembered by Patrick Smith. One of the best Florida books ever.

Cross Creek about the author Majorie Kinnan Rawlings (The Yearling) starring Mary Steenburgen who did a very good job of portraying Ms. Rawlings, and Peter Coyote

One of my favorite Florida authors is Nora Zeale Hurston who wrote Their Eyes Were Watching God, and Dust Tracks in the Road. I admire her so much and am glad there has been a revival and recognition of her work. Zora Neale Hurston - Home

eta: Shadow Country which is a compilation of a trilogy Killing Mr Watson, Lost Man's River, Bone by Bone.
