Don't forget "CSI: Miami". I'm watching it on DVD right now.

Thanks again for all the great suggestions.

Here's a (Florida public library) link I just came across (click on Florida fiction when you get to the page):

Happy summer reading/viewing!

Like Dexter, it's set in Miami, but it's shot in California. Sometimes you can catch a big hill or mountain range in the far background.
The CSIs are fun shows though.

I was going to say all of Carl Hiassen's books as well--he's a good writer, and they are a hoot. He's also a serious environmentalist.

Tim Dorsey writes books kind of in the same vein--crim comedies, set in Florida. Showing the seamier side of Florida.

I've read all of the Tim Dorsey books. His characters are hysterical: Serge Storms, Coleman and Lenny. He goes all over Florida and he loves the state and is a history buff. I look up the locations on the internet so I can see what they are like - Dorsey sends Serge to real locations and sometimes even the real people who own the businesses "ply themselves" in the books. Lots of Florida history thrown in too. I love those books!

One of my favorite movies from long ago...Johnny Tiger.

I wish I could find a copy on DVD - I'd love to see it again.

Another one I've loved is Ulee's Gold:

Just remembered the TV series Dave's World, on in the 1990s, in which Harry Anderson (who previously had played the judge on Night Court) played Dave Barry (set in Miami, of course).

And Flipper (1960s).

And speaking of Dave Barry, I just checked out his web site, and he has a new novel set in Florida.

For any fans, there is also a schedule of upcoming personal appearance, including a free talk, Q&A, and book signing in Fort Lauderdale next week. (Nope, I'm not a PR person, just someone who can remember how much fun I had reading his column in the Sunday paper out loud with friends back in the '80s. Haven't kept up since, so will have to read the new novel.)
