I have a Land's End coat that keeps me toasty in 10 degree temps. That's as cold as I can say, because that's as cold as been that I have worn the coat. I bought it specifically for bitter cold weather. Obviously, you should be sensible and dress in layers, as that is the best way to keep you body warm. But you probably already know that. Anyhoo...check out Lands End.
I found that regardless of the coat, the closer to your body the coat is, the warmer it is. I have many coats (having come from the northeast) but have not found them as warm as the peacoat I recently got from Overstock. I think it's because I have it close fitting and belted thus keeping cold air from coming in between the coat and my body. The coat I got isn't as bulky, but so far, it's the warmest I've ever had it.
It worked for me Woof...wear a lighter sweater underneath (not those bulky ones), and then a snuggier-fit coat. It also has the additional benefit of less bulk so it doesn't bother you while driving, or getting the edge caught in your car door and flapping around while you drive (I've done everything, believe me!). I can post a link of the one I got if you want. It also is more tailored and with the attached self belt (which you'll never lose or misplace), it hugs you at the waist and is very flattering on the figure! Much better than walking around looking like a tent, or in the case of a down coat, looking like a comforter!
I'm tired of the LL Bean look. I'm trying to find something else that is warm.
What is the warmest material? Is it down or thinsulate?
I'm not sure what "look" that is you are talking about. The warmest coat is going to be a parka style. The material really isn't the most important factor - it's how the coat is constructed and how it fits you. That said, down is very warm, but it can be bulky and, and if it gets wet, it's a mess. Thinsulate is great, but there are probably many new synthetic blends out there these days. I'd look for a microfiber shell, and maybe a fleece zip-out lining. Try Cabellas, they have some great coats. Columbia, North Face both make good cold-stopping outerwear.
I confess that I already have several jackets. I'm just obsessed, that's all. I don't think it's possible to have too many and tis' the season for discounts.

Oh hell...you're talking to the coat queen here. Confessions are on the house.
