I buy the men's zip off leg pants/shorts from Costco. Nice pockets! And just above my knee.

I have some Time and Tru utility shorts. They're awesome, cute, flattering, and have pockets galore. They might be sold out this late in the season. They don't cost much. They are a relaxed fit, so you might need a smaller size that usual. So just keep that in mind.

Contrary to what you say, I find that most women's jeans these days have short, useless front pockets.

That is very true. Someone above mentioned buying longer shorts to get longer pockets but that doesn't always work. I have Levis jeans with pockets I can barely trust to hold my keys much less money.

You can purchase "replacement pockets" at a sewing store about $5 (Joann etc) remove the 'mod pockets' and sew or iron in the new. Deep enough.

Funny thing about this thread is that OP is a man. Everyone seems to be giving advice about women’s shorts.

Guilty as charged, but in my defense I assumed that since guys stick everything in pockets that all men's shorts would have adequately deep pockets. Another casualty to cost cutting?

If cheap, shallow pockets are now an issue in men's clothing, maybe the OP (and women as well) should shop for shorts via catalogs like LL Bean, and other sports equipment outlets (Eddie Bauer, REI Co-op, etc.). Usually, shorts made for hiking/camping enthusiasts are designed to be utilitarian.

Right.
Men carrying lots of stuff in their pockets might need to consider cargo pants/shorts
Also look for a frogmouth pockets (AKA cross pockets style)

Or maybe men should stop trying to carry too much junk in what it’s meant to be a pocket not a backpack or a suitcase.

That IS funny, seeing as many women buy mens shorts to take care of the short pocket issue!

Most women don't stuff their pants pockets with stuff. If there is more than phone, keys and wallet - they carry a bag or purse.
