I will never understand why they make the pockets on men's shorts shallow and cut down the side in such a way that you loose your things when you sit down. How many lost wallets phones keys ect to this evil pocket design ? Sat in a car, went to the movies... Oh crap my keys or wallet or phone fell out of my stupid pockets !!!
Why are pants allowed to have good pockets, shorts are the same as pants only shorter WHY do the pockets have to be different on shorts ?
I would pay $100 to know why they make the pockets like that.

How could it possibly be style when the only difference between pants and shorts should be that shorts end at about the knee and pants go to the bottom of the ankle.
This does not explain making the pockets different.
Last summer I acquired some Echo athletic shorts (you know, the rhinocerous mascot; those guys) with regular deep pockets. The pockets were stitched shut across the tops, like about 1/2" down from the top. 5 minutes with a seam ripper restored their full functionality but.... why?
If it makes you feel any better, I have way too many women's pants that do the same thing. Drives me nuts!
That's probably why my husband loves *gasp* the (dreaded by many for reasons I don't completely get) cargo short/pants style.
There is some style element to it- shallower pockets make for a more streamlined cut with less excess fabric, and the angle of the pocket is designed to be attractive while standing (and therefore often useless while sitting).
I would guess for the same reason they make the pockets in women's winter coats so shallow you risk losing your gloves.........to save money on fabric.
Never had this problem, and I am always carrying keys/change, and my wallet. Phone is on the belt. My shorts are mid calf ones. Do not care for the cargo ones, or ones that are knee or lower. For me, if they are that low, might as well wear pants.
Usually now buy shorts at Cabella's.
