I noticed a couple of years ago that a big designer label had turned out a glittery pair: Chanel or some very exclusive label like that (they cost upward of $1000). So that must mean they've "arrived".
To the OP: they come in 2 widths, so be sure to get the narrow option (=for women) if you decide to try them. They're orthopedic sandals, so they don't have the foam cushion and soft sole that other brands have; they're actually not so comfortable, because of that, but they're very supportive, which is the main thing. And they've come out with a big variety of models, colors, prints, etc., so if you think you want to try them, look around online to see everything that's available besides the more standard-looking ones. The company seems to have split into separate brands, so aside from looking up "Birkenstock", also look up "Birkis", "Tatami", Papillio, and other spin-offs. Most have the same footbed and basic construction; they're still Birkenstocks.

Thanks for the tip although I have noticed that my feet are too wide for most flip flops. Target has some Birk knock offs:
They cost $25 which are a lot less expensive than the Birks. They probably wouldn't last as long, however
They're actually NOT supportive for all feet. I have plantar fasciitis, and they don't have high enough arches for me, and def not enough shock absorption.
