I love shoes. At one time, I made a deal with myself that if I came home from a shopping trip without a new pair, I could treat myself to ice cream!
I don't like flip-flops. Hate the sound they make; hate the look; hate it when they break and I'm left to limp to a store to get another pair. (Yes, it happened to me)
I try to wear footwear that is a complement to my clothing and a nice heel is called for when dressing up.
For Summer, in capris, running errands, Birkenstocks are fine. I have three pair. I don't particularly care about "in style" and what others wear is of little interest to me.
Wear what you like, what feels comfortable, and do it proudly.
I wore birks in high school in the 90's. I proudly had several colors and thought them quite stylish.
At this point I don't even think they're comfortable, my walking sandal is a pair of Chacos Chaco Z/1® Classic at Zappos.com (which are only marginally better looking than birkenstocks) but a lot more comfy to my foot.
I personally wear Tevas. Not quite as cliche and infinitely more comfortable.
To the OP, if you like Birks, then don't worry what others think. Personally, I prefer sport sandals with support and cushioned footbeds. In addition to Tevas, there are so many great choices of sport sandals, not necessarily the style of Birks, that have good support and are very comfortable... Merrell, Keen, Clarks, and a lot of others.
